Podcasting
Podcasting is an up and current feature of some primary school lessons in order to provide pupils with a real context to their recording and provide a real audience. Podcasts can also be used for presentations and displays within school so that pupils can acheive a sense of pride in their work and also they can provide visitors and parents an understanding of what is being carried out within the school.
The podcast allows you to record a piece of information or presentaton that reflects a theme within the classroom at the time and this can then be used within the classroom to refer back to if required or it can be placed on the Internet for others to listen to. Some podcasts could reflect a certain topic that is being carried out in the classroom or it could be the pupils talking about their opinions and ideas regarding a particular news events or local event.
Podcasts are a really beneficial tool for pupils to carry out as not only do they get to develop their speaking skills but they also develop literacy skills through the writing of scripts or interview questions. These scripts are then used to talk about a topic or interview a certain individual thus embedding literacy with oral skills and computing. Podcats also provide valuable time for pupils to work together in goups, developing team building and bonding skills, vital for future communication and social development. In the instances where scripts have to be formulated pupils need to work together to ensure that the scripts are rehearsed, are fluent in their spoken language and grammar is correct.
Not only are podcasts a great computing skill for pupils to develop but they are also a crucial tool for pupils to access and use as a revision guide and tool. Many podcasts available on the Internet range from a variety of topics in all manner of subjects which can be used a revision tools to aid pupils in Year 6 and onwards to Key Stage 3 and 4.
Podcasting is an area of computing that I would like to carry out in my next placement or in my fist teaching post. I feel it is not only a crucial tool for pupils to learn and access but it can also be highly beneficial for providing pupuls with alternative revision methods who find listening to information easy to access and retain. I also feel it could be a lovely tool for communication between parents and school as parents would be able to access the podcasts, made by their children, from the school website to learn about what the pupils are covering during the term.
