Getting to grips with Wiki
As part of the PGCE Primary course we were invited to join the McrPrimaryPGCEChildrensliteraturewiki, a site set up by the Eglish department that apparently had huge success in the previous years. This site allows us to contribute the books we have read each week on to, formulating our own private mini library when you think about it. Each week we are asked to read at least 3 books, covering both key stages, and then choose one to add to the wiki site. We have to write a little about the books content, add a picture and tags, and share our new books with evrybody else on the course. It is a great idea as already there are 207 books that have ben added to the site, which may help us out when we are on our placements and need to find a book related to the topic being taught.
Here is a step by step guide on how to add your book to the wiki page
1) Once you are logged in and have a profile set up you will see this page
2) In the top right hand corner there is a blue page motif. When you move your mouse over it says Add Page. Click on this and you will see this page. The page has two text boxes at the top now. The first says Name and this is the title of the book you are adding to the site, underneath that is a box for tags. This box allows you to type in all the things you think are related to the topic of your book for example nature, seasons, etc.
3) Once you have added the title of the book and the appropriate tags you click create and then you will be taken to the next page. On here you can add in the synposis of the book you are adding.
4) Now here comes the tricky part, adding a picture to go along with the text you have just added. I find that if you go to Google and you copy a picture and then try and put it in it doesn't work as well so I usually save the image in my Downloads then I can easily put it in. Above the text there is a little button that says 'File' click on it and a box like this will appear.
5) Click on the Upload Files button and you will then be able to browse for your saved image of the book cover in your files. Once you have foudn it click on it and it will start to upload it. You will know it is uploaded when the image of it appears underneath the text box at the top. So it should look like this.
6) The image will then upload into the text, you can then move it around so it is in a place you think is best for it. Remember to click save at the top right hand corner of the page for it to be added to the site.
7) You have just addded your first book to the wiki site, just remember to keep adding them so the collection gets bigger.
