rGPP ICT Facilities
I was really lucky with the ICT facilities that were available to me during my GPP Placement, especially as I had a Year 1 class.
Interactive Whiteboards
These were used mainly to display videos, presentations and pictures for the children to see which supported my lesson or provided extra information to help embed learning for the chidlren. They were also used for the children to pick their options for dinner on a daily basis.
Laptops
The classroom I was in were allocated 8 laptops each day. These were brought in every morning by a Laptop Monitor from Year 6 and were collected in the afternoon and placed back in the ICT suite until the next day. These were a brilliant tool as these could be used in every lesson carried out, if required. I usually tried to include these in every Maths lesson so that one group of children could use them to help embed their ICT skills and their Mathematic skills. Children also used the laptops to create Christmas cards as part of a local competition, in which a child from my class won. The laptops were also used for children to carry out research during Science and Theme lessons to help the children build up their independent research skills.
Ipads
The class were allocated 2 Ipads each day, however these were not always taken out of the ICT suite unless they were required. Ipads that were left in the suite were then available for other classes to use if required. In addition the majority of the usage from the Ipad came from the teacher Ipad which was used to take photographs of the children working as evidence. The photos were then placed onto the system as a collection of evidence and were also used to place in the childrens books as evidence of the lesson. The Ipads were also used for researching if needed at times.
Immersion Suite
The best facility available within the school in realtion to ICT skills. The immersion room, available for teachers to book out for their class as and when they required it, comprised of three green walls with overhead projectors and built in computer. We were able to see this room in use during the Christmas period in school as it was set up as Santa's Grotto for the chidren to visit during their class party. The software in there allowed individuals to select images to be displayed on the walls, with two walls displaying the same image and the middle wall being able to display a different image. In addition the room allowed for music or sound effects to be played which refelcted the images being shown and furthermore the temperature could be altered to reflect the images. Prior to the start of my placement the children in my class had used the immersion room to read the Brown Bear story, displaying trees on all the walls, having a muggy atmosphere and birds tweeting.
The images below show the immersion suite in the Christmas setting that was to reflect Santa's Grotto. Two of the walls displayed snow covered trees whilst the middle wall displayed a house with a Christmas tree and log fire. The temperature was turned down so that the room became chilly and wind sound effects were played to represent the snowy outside. The staff also placed some white felt on the floor to cover the carpet and to make the room look covered in snow.
Overall, the children were able to fully immerse with the setting and the excitement they gained from the setup was clear.
The video above was filmed by myself whilst in the school, of the Immersion Room, set up in the Christmas setting.
