E-Safety

Being safe whilst online is a crucial tool that all children need to have in order to protect themselves whilst online, protect their information and be able to recognsie inappropriate behaviour and comments from other people.

In schools now there is a huge focus on making children understand how they need to be safe online. In the Year 1 Class I am in the children are made aware of Hector's World, a site aimed at children to teach them how to be safe online. This site contains information about staying safe online, games that get the children engaged but at the same time teaching them about safety online and videos that the children can watch that talk about certain aspects of online safety. Th following key points are taken from Hector's world:

Tell your Mum or Dad if you see something online that upsets you.

Or if someone makes you feel unhappy.

You can also talk to a trusted adult, like a teacher: they can help.

Hide your password.

Only ever share your password with your parents - never with your friends.

Someone else could go online pretending to be you and do something that could get you into trouble.

Interesting websites can be fun.

Check with Mum or Dad if a site is okay to use before you visit.

Somtimes they can set up a list of good sites just for you.

Name calling or being mean is not cool and could be cyberbullying.

Be nice when talking online or over the phone.

Look out for yourself and for others.

Keep your special personal information safe.

Never give your real name, address or phone number to anyone, you don't know in the real world.

Use a nickname in chatrooms or when you play games on the computer.

Encouraging the children to carry out these 5 steps whilst they are online helps the children understand what is acceptable and understand what they should be and shouldn't be doing or telling people whilst they are online. Online safety is a key part of protecting the children from any verbal or potentially physical danger and instilling this in them from the very early ages of school should help protect them for the rest of their lives.
