Classroom Name Generator
In this half term the Year 1 class are looking at traditional tales and in particular are looking at the story of Little Red Riding Hood.
In the previous session the day before we read the story, talked about the characters, the setting, which characters we thought were bad and good and why we thought that and then the children had to work in small groups of 5 in order to re-enact the story of Little Red Riding Hood.
The next session requires the children to take the information they now have about the story of Little Red Riding Hood and apply it to work out where certain parts of the story fit into the sequence. The plan originally required all the children to sit in a circle and pass a bag around the group which contained pictures in from the story of Little Red Riding Hood. However with 29 children and not much carpet space I thought it may be better to carry out a random name generator to select children to come to the front and pick a picture and place it into the rest of the sequence created. Sometimes I find when you are teaching you always seem to find yourselves targeting certain children, either because you know they will know the answer or because they are the ones always with their hands up wanting to answer. However I thought by creating this it adds a little suspense to the classroom as nobody knows who will be picked next and also it then allows me to encourage all the children to be engaged and thinking as if they are next up they need to be ready to sort the picture into the sequence.
Also by creating a tool like this it can then be applied to any other activities we may carry out in the classroom where no children in particular are being targeted and it then allows for all children to have equal opportunities to be selected to take part.
In addition, I find this a really interactive tool and all the children should hopefully engage with it and want to be selected. I will still have to enfore the fact that if I don't think they are listening that if there name comes up I can spin it again so somebody who is switched on and ready to learn can have a go, allowing me to reinforce my expectations and rules.
